Morgan Spurlock, the award-winning documentary filmmaker best known for his 2004 Oscar-nominated film "Super Size Me," has died at 53. According to a statement released by his family on Friday, Spurlock passed away on Thursday in New York City due to complications from cancer.

Spurlock gained international fame for his groundbreaking documentary "Super Size Me," in which he consumed nothing but food from McDonald's for 30 consecutive days to explore the impact of the fast food industry on health. The film was a commercial and critical success, grossing over US$110 million worldwide while raising awareness about the dangers of processed food and excessive calorie consumption.

Beyond "Super Size Me," Spurlock directed and produced numerous other documentaries that tackled social and political issues, including "Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," "Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?" and "The Man Who Bought Hollywood." His work earned him numerous accolades, including an Academy Award nomination, an Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award.
